Knowing who you are
EXPLORING YOURSELF THROUGH ART
We all carry stories about who we are. Stories shaped by our experiences, our relationships and the way we’ve come to see ourselves.
But what happens when we look at ourselves through a different lens?
Over the course of this workshop, I’ll guide you through creating a self portrait using colour, texture, shape, symbols, fragments, words and whatever else finds its way into your artwork.
We won’t begin with a mirror and you won’t be asked to paint something perfect.
Your portrait might contain a body, a face or neither. It might be abstract, strange, beautiful, fragmented, or contain things you don’t yet understand.
The point isn’t simply to make a self portrait. It’s to use what you create as another lens through which to see yourself.
Once the work begins to take shape, we’ll look at it more closely. What have you included? What have you left out? What feels important? What surprises you?
What might the colours, shapes, symbols and choices you’ve made tell you about how you see yourself?
There are no fixed interpretations and I won’t tell you what your work means. Instead, I’ll help you explore it, question it and see what you notice for yourself.
Drawing on my background in psychotherapy, and somatic practice alongside my own work as an artist, I’ll guide you from the first mark to the finished piece.
No previous art experience is needed. You don’t need to know how to draw. Just a willingness to see what might emerge when you learn to create this way.
