There are times for talking, and there are times when we need a therapy that works solely with our body.

Somatic comes from the Greek sōma, meaning body. Therapy has its roots there too, in therapeia, a word associated with attending to, caring for and healing.

For thousands of years, we have turned to the body to gain insight, awareness and a greater sense of equilibrium. Long before we understood the nervous system, we understood the importance of what our body could share with us.

Whatever happens to us in life, happens to our bodies too.

Fear, loss, anxiety, grief and overwhelm are experienced physically as well as emotionally, and while our minds may understand that an experience has passed, our bodies can continue to respond long afterwards.

Sometimes we need another way to resolve this.

The somatic therapy I offer comes from over twenty years of working with the human body, psychotherapy and the relationship between our emotional and physical experience.

It brings together a fusion of massage, rhythm, sound and stillness, so your thoughts become quieter and your nervous system can begin to settle.

As you move into deeper states of relaxation, your experience of yourself can begin to change. Time can feel different, your thoughts become less dominant and you can access a depth of awareness, insight and rest that is difficult to find in everyday life.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS KIND OF THERAPY?

You don’t need to be struggling with something to benefit from somatic therapy. Sometimes just the experience itself of slowing down, being deeply rested and spending time outside your usual thinking mind can be valuable in itself.

But it can be particularly meaningful if you feel disconnected from yourself or your body, find it difficult to properly switch off, or feel that anxiety, fear or other familiar responses have begun to take up too much space.

It’s not that I wasn’t feeling enough, it’s just that my more fear based responses had become so loud that I had lost access to the other more intuitive parts of who I was, the somatic work allowed those parts of me to safely emerge again”

If you have already spent time in therapy or personal development and feel that talking has taken you a long way, but not quite everywhere, then somatic work can take you that one step further.

And sometimes there doesn’t need to be a problem at all. You may simply want to experience what happens when you slow everything down and encounter yourself differently.
